About Me

My photo

Armchair theorist, poet, and occasional IT manager, Sascha B. is equipped with a Master's Degree in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Texas, and is not afraid to use it. His work has been published by the University Press of America, Edwin Mellen Press, University of Texas Press, and a variety of small journals nationwide. He is also the proprietor and baker for 3141 Pie, of which you should eat many.

The Deal

I stopped blogging in 2013, when life overtook me. My father became ill and died shortly thereafter, and my mother was left with increasing dementia. I became the primary caregiver, and now orchestrate my mother's care and our family estate.

Now, I am coming up for air again.

Looking for the next book to read. All suggestions welcome.

My reading list is over here.

...And Then There's This

Courtesy of TPM, this Daily Show riff on just how far Fox news has sunk in the turning of the tables. Despite their effectiveness as a voice for the former administration and the GOP, I'm not certain that this level of outrageous crap can survive as an opposition:

Observations

I've been quietly watching, in amazed relief, the reality of the Obama administration settling in. To date, three days into the new regime, the high notes are high: from unofficial reports to executive orders, I feel a wave of surreal belief that we are back on track to being governed effectively.

  • Closing Guantanamo and reviewing detainee policy;
  • Repealing the global ban on funding for family planning;
  • Appointment of Holbrooke to deal with Afghanistan and Pakistan;
  • Pay freezes and reviews for staff;
  • Repeal of the secrecy laws on White House files;

and on and on. Sensible, honest, direct. It's as though we are waking from a dream.

At the same time, unemployment in California has now surpassed 9%, and shows no sign of slowing. The economy is still in shambles, and we have yet to see any stimulus have any real impact. Still, things look more hopeful than they have in a long while.

Here's to hope.

President Barack Obama!

A new era begins with the 44th President of this nation. Sworn in, speech delivered.

Now the work begins.
