About Me

My photo

Armchair theorist, poet, and occasional IT manager, Sascha B. is equipped with a Master's Degree in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Texas, and is not afraid to use it. His work has been published by the University Press of America, Edwin Mellen Press, University of Texas Press, and a variety of small journals nationwide. He is also the proprietor and baker for 3141 Pie, of which you should eat many.

The Deal

I stopped blogging in 2013, when life overtook me. My father became ill and died shortly thereafter, and my mother was left with increasing dementia. I became the primary caregiver, and now orchestrate my mother's care and our family estate.

Now, I am coming up for air again.

Looking for the next book to read. All suggestions welcome.

My reading list is over here.

Home Is Home

Well, I'm back from my Roman Holiday, and while I am still shaking off the jet lag, it seems that the whole world has shifted slightly while I've been off eating ice cream in foreign climes. The Iraq govt. has moved forward slightly---but only slightly---in its selection of cabinet; the Syrian withdrawal of visible troops from Lebanon has been completed; a new pope has been invested; and while Berlusconi faces his confidence vote today in Italy, expect more news regarding the Sgrena Baghdad incident and the problematic "joint report" soon after Mr. B. survives the vote. But not before.

On a cheerier note, here is the menu from our meal at Dal Bolognese tuesday evening:

Bresaola with parmigiano and arugula;
Carpaccio with a "tonnato" sauce;
wide noodles with duck ragout;
pasta "three ways": bolognese, with pesto, and with a cream sauce;
"Bolliti Misti", the classic boiled meat plate, served with fruit pickled in mustard sauce, and a pesto-chutney sauce;
thin veal cutlets in a rich butter sauce with perfect mashed taters;
"Mamma Dolce", a hunk of perfect semifreddo doused with hot, rich chocolate sauce;

all washed down with a bottle of "Il Bosco" 2001 Syrah.

Even so, it's nice to be back home. Expect some random rants about stuff soon.
